When to Replace Your Windows

We know that replacing old windows will lower your energy bill, but what are the other reasons to look for in order to know it’s time to get replacement windows?

  • DIFFICULTY OPENING AND CLOSING WINDOWS

Windows should move fluidly and fit into place easily – if they do not, it might be time to replace them! Not being able to open and/or close windows effectively can be a serious safety hazard for anyone, but especially in a home with children.

  • FEEL AIR COMING IN, EVEN WHEN WINDOWS ARE SHUT

It’s not a good sign if you feel cold air / warm air coming in through your windows. Many homes are still equipped with single pane windows, which leave rooms chilly and dry. If you notice curtains or houseplants move even when the windows are shut and latched, take a look at some new double and triple pane glass windows to eliminate drafts.

  • CONDENSATION OR FOGGING BETWEEN GLASS

A small amount of condensation is normal, but you do not want it to get to a point where the condensation is clouding your view and leaving the window trim soaked. If condensation or fog becomes a regular occurrence, then you need replacement windows.

  • WINDOWS ROTTING OR DETERIORATING

Look for chipping, deterioration, and water stains on or around the window as a sign that you are in need of new windows. Check both inside and outside your home for signs of rotting and remember – painted windows require regular maintenance, otherwise rotting will happen again.

  • WINDOWS ARE PAINTED SHUT

Great for the winter – not so much for getting a cool summer breeze. Replacement windows provide a weathertight seal, without having to be painted shut.

  • REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE HARD TO FIND OR HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED

Think of your windows like a car – when the parts you need to make repairs are no longer available because they are outdated and old, you have a problem.

  • YOUR HOUSE WAS BUILT BEFORE 1960

Lead-based paint was especially common in homes built prior to 1960 until it was banned after 1978. Single pane windows are a real concern because the friction of opening and closing the sashes can release lead dust and result in lead poisoning.

  • IT IS DIFFICULT TO CLEAN WINDOWS PROPERLY

New windows have been designed to be much easier to clean; some even have self cleaning glass. Old windows that get stuck or are not operating properly is something you do not have to keep putting up with!

  • OLD WINDOWS DO NOT MATCH HOME’S STYLE

Whether it’s renovations, painting, or redefining your home’s style – the windows play a huge part. Windows make up 15% of your home’s exterior and are a huge component of curb appeal.

  • TIRED OF PUTTING UP AND REMOVING STORM WINDOWS

Replace your old “storm windows” with new replacement windows, which are manufactured to be energy efficient as well as impact resistant, so you only need one set all year round!
